Layflat binding
Spreads that stay open.
Each spread is a single sheet with one fold in it, mounted rather than cut and glued.
Layflat, 180 degrees, no gutter
Nothing is lost in the middle, and the book stays open on a table by itself. A photograph set across the centre crosses it whole.
Ledger construction
The load of opening the book is carried by the cloth and the rigid core rather than by the cover material. The spine is wrapped in bookbinding cloth, with leather straps and brass rivets on the wood cover.
In the editor
The layouts for a spread include panoramas and layouts that run across the fold. Most layouts keep a margin from the edge. The full-bleed ones run to the edge, so keep faces and text away from it.
